Early Marvel’s Wolverine Impressions Praise Story, Raise Doubts About Combat

Early hands-on impressions of Marvel’s Wolverine praise the game’s story, dark atmosphere, and acting performances, while raising questions about the depth of its combat system.

Journalists recently spent around two hours playing a preview build of Marvel’s Wolverine on PS5 Pro. The opening segment earned strong praise for its narrative pacing, dark tone, and Liam McIntyre’s performance capturing Logan’s inner pain and rage.

The story features Troy Baker as Nathaniel Essex alongside Sabretooth. The cutscenes and dialogue maintain a high standard of quality that matches the tone of the original comic books.

Reactions to the combat system proved more mixed. While encounters are violent, visually striking, and fluid, content creator Skill Up noted that the mechanics lean heavily on standard attacks, parries, and dodges. Fights rely substantially on basic strikes and repetitive button presses. Unlike Marvel’s Spider-Man, Logan rarely takes to the air, and special abilities have long cooldowns. Limited combo potential also makes skirmishes feel repetitive.

In terms of visual impact, gore, dismemberment, finisher animations, and overall responsiveness, the title delivers the high level of polish expected from Insomniac Games.

A fight against a Sentinel also raised concerns after turning out to be repetitive.

Skill Up characterized the preview as a polished, high-budget action game with outstanding narrative delivery, even if the underlying combat system currently lacks variety, flexibility, and mechanical depth.

Full reviews will arrive following the game’s release in mid-September.
