Minecraft’s developers have clarified why the Ender Dragon stays confined to its own realm instead of roaming the Overworld.
Although Minecraft is a game about building and creativity, it also contains many elements that can obliterate player creations — and the resources spent to make them. Mojang’s leadership recognises this tension: CCO Jens Bergensten has admitted they probably wouldn’t add the Creeper to the game today, even though the Creeper is now the franchise’s unofficial mascot. The creature’s capacity to destroy builds would be far more contentious if introduced in a modern release.
Another rule they follow is: “don’t add features that wreck players’ builds.” Scheviak notes it would be unwise to let the Ender Dragon roam the Overworld because it would cause a host of problems — from unnecessary stress for players to widespread destruction (and even the absurdity of a dragon smashing through delicate biomes like ice spikes).
Scheviak adds: “You’re just at home tending your potatoes, and suddenly a dragon is razing everything.” Bergensten concurs: “That’s not a great game experience.”
Bergensten also points out that players vary in how much challenge they want. A boss that swoops over the world and flattens builds won’t suit everyone. He compares this to the Wither: it has similar destructive potential, but players choose when and where to summon it, letting them limit damage to their bases.
