McMillen recalls two prior attempts to create a similar game, both of which remained unreleased. Glaiel describes an even larger collection of abandoned concepts. “I probably have four unfinished RPGs in my portfolio that never made it to the finish line. It’s a very challenging genre to execute correctly,” he remarks.
However, as Mewgenics took shape, the decision to pursue a more ambitious project felt justified. “We’ve developed many games and gained significant experience, both individually and as a team,” Glaiel explains. “Eventually, we realized we were ready to revisit this genre. It’s a herculean task, but there was no reason we couldn’t succeed.”
“What was the alternative?” McMillen asks rhetorically.
“Exactly,” Glaiel agrees. “Were we going to develop yet another platformer? Were we going to make The Binding of Isaac 2?”
“Precisely,” McMillen adds. “Constructing The Binding of Isaac 2 would have been the easy choice.”
“It probably would have secured 20 million wishlists within moments of its announcement,” Glaiel concludes.
