Handling a roster of companions is a classic RPG mechanic: players often must balance competing loyalties, sometimes triggering departures or deaths depending on their choices. While other games have escalated these stakes before, The Outer Worlds 2 marks the first time the series pushes companion disagreements into potential lethal conflict. This approach contrasts with Obsidian’s 2025 RPG Avowed, where companions tend to remain loyal under most circumstances.
Adler added that companions will usually warn you before reaching a breaking point.
“There are pivotal moments where things can go badly,” Adler explained. “A companion might say something like, ‘You’re taking me on this mission,’ and depending on how you’ve treated them, that choice can have major consequences.”
“Some actions really rub other companions the wrong way, and they’ll tell you — ‘If you do this, it’s a point of no return for me.'”
All of this design is intended to make companions react more believably to the player’s choices — something the team says wasn’t consistently present in the first game, but which they wanted to emphasise for the sequel.
The Outer Worlds 2 launches on October 29 for PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC.
