Silent Hill is one of Konami’s cornerstone franchises, and the publisher was determined not to leave players with the sense that its future was undecided.
Producer Motoi Okamoto explained on X why three projects were announced simultaneously in 2022 — a remake of Silent Hill 2, Silent Hill F, and Silent Hill Townfall. He said the company didn’t want to “test the waters” with a single remake, but aimed to show it was serious about revitalizing the brand.
“Working on a remake and a new entry at the same time is always risky, but it’s the only way to demonstrate commitment to the series. Players won’t take an interest in the franchise if they can’t see its future. If the company waits, the audience will wait too.”
He previously clarified that remakes aren’t made solely for longtime fans:
“Even when we focus on veterans, at most half return. That’s why it’s important to also appeal to new players.”
His remarks came shortly after Silent Hill F was announced as a visual novel, and ahead of the film Return to Silent Hill — which is based on the second game and is due next year.
