Japanese Martial Arts Master Settles Debate Over Ghost of Yotei Animations — Atsu’s Moves Recreated in Real Life

Some people question not only the heroine’s appearance but also the way she moves.

The protagonist of Ghost of Yotei performs a number of striking combat maneuvers, but it’s not just those that catch players’ attention. The motion of drawing and sheathing the long odachi sword is also a key element of the game’s atmosphere.

An odachi typically starts at about 90 centimeters in length and weighs roughly 1.5 kg. Atsu withdraws the weapon from a challenging position—she carries the odachi on her back. As it turns out, this particular motion can be replicated in real life.

A martial arts instructor posted a video online recreating the heroine’s movements from Ghost of Yotei. In this case the primary contact is with the dull part of the blade (the spine), although there remains a chance of grazing the sharp edge.

<p>However, Tenshinryu <a target=noted that “not all movements are a direct motion-capture of Tenshin-ryu, and many elements have been significantly adapted for gameplay, so it isn’t Tenshin-ryu reproduced verbatim.”
