On October 2, 2025, Nintendo released Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 for the Nintendo Switch family, bringing both platformers together outside of the Super Mario 3D All-Stars compilation. The launch includes enhancements tailored for both the original Switch and the newer Switch 2.
Comparisons reveal the distinctions between these refreshed editions and earlier releases.
According to video analysis, Super Mario Galaxy receives its first official update since the Wii era. Unlike the first title—which was already adjusted for 3D All-Stars—Galaxy 2 has seen only minimal changes, with virtually no alterations to textures or assets. The most notable differences concern resolution and performance: on the original Switch both games run at 1080p with a locked 60 fps, while the Switch 2 renders natively at 4K at the same frame rate. Minor banding is visible on the Switch 2 image, which may be addressed in a future patch.
By contrast, the Galaxy 1 build in 3D All-Stars largely preserved the original Wii assets, offering only an upscaled resolution without texture updates. The new release demonstrates how a resolution boost alone can significantly change the game’s visual impact. On Switch 2, the increased sharpness brings out details that were previously obscured on older hardware.
The compilation also adds several quality-of-life features: a new Assist Mode for newcomers, an updated user interface, and an unlockable Storybook. Control options are more flexible now—supporting buttons, thumbsticks, and motion controls via the Joy-Con.
