The reveal of Horizon: Steel Frontiers took many by surprise. Developers have confirmed the game could eventually arrive on the PS5.
This week PlayStation unveiled a new entry in Aloy’s universe. Horizon: Steel Frontiers turned out not to be a single-player experience but a full-fledged MMORPG for PC and mobile devices. The decision to omit a PS5 launch has sparked considerable discussion.
It’s no wonder players are voicing frustration over the absence of a PS5 version. Social feeds filled with comments and disappointment that reached the development team.
Li So, the project’s executive producer, revealed details about development and plans for other platforms. Work began in 2019. According to Li So, the release is targeted for late 2026 or early 2027, so there’s still significant work ahead.
Horizon: Steel Frontiers may yet come to PS5. The developers say they’re “positive” about that possibility and note the game is “technically compatible” with Sony’s console. Further negotiations with PlayStation are required and are underway.
The project is currently in pre-alpha, supports groups of up to 16 players, and the team plans to scale that up. Horizon: Steel Frontiers will be free-to-play, with an optional subscription offering cosmetic items and early access to content. There will be no loot boxes — the studio is aiming for “player-friendly monetization” that won’t drive users away.
