Lately, players have voiced frustration with the game’s technical state.
The Helldivers 2 team has been hearing community reports about optimization problems and other issues. Arrowhead Game Studios is weighing the option of running a closed beta so they can fix potential bugs before issuing a full update release.
Helldivers 2 game director Mikael Eriksson acknowledged that a large number of players are encountering crashes:
The reason is that, although we perform extensive internal testing and strive to catch every case, sometimes [bugs] can slip through […] even a single crash or similar issue… can be enough to sharply raise the crash rate across many different players.
The developer clarified that this happens because “extensive testing” can’t replicate the scale of the live game with its full player base. That’s why they’re considering a closed beta — it would let them include regular players in testing.
If they go ahead with that plan, they would admit “up to a thousand players or more.” Eriksson believes that number would be sufficient to track down crashes.
