Halo: Campaign Evolved Developers Use Unreal Engine 5 Built on Legacy Code

Halo: Campaign Evolved will arrive with upgraded 4K visuals, four-player co-op, and a simultaneous launch across multiple platforms. The title is being developed using Unreal Engine 5 layered atop the original Halo: Combat Evolved codebase — an approach likened to the remaster of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

According to the developers, Unreal Engine 5 is being applied over the first game’s legacy code. Game Director Greg Herman said in an interview:

“We’re building on the original foundation, and UE5’s new tools let us move the series forward while preserving its essence.”

He noted the studio already has experience working with Unreal and believes that blending modern technology with legacy assets will help keep Halo relevant for future generations.

The team promises the gameplay will retain the authentic Halo: Combat Evolved feel, even as levels have been expanded.

“We’ll keep extending our technical capabilities while maintaining Halo’s classic atmosphere—in its sound, gameplay, and overall tone.”

Halo: Campaign Evolved is scheduled for release in 2026 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The game will not include multiplayer, but it will introduce three new missions set before the original story — featuring new enemies, fresh mechanics, and appearances by Master Chief and Sergeant Johnson.
