Guardians of the Galaxy: a multiplayer mode was planned, it was canceled, explanations

This was undoubtedly the great sensation of E3 2021 on the side of Square Enix, namely the announcement of a game Guardians of the Galaxy, developed by Eidos Montreal, the studio behind the two episodes of Deus Ex. In production since 2015, the game is intended to be a narrative solo adventure, the opposite of what Marvel’s Avengers is, which has disappointed many players. In the game, it is Star-Lord / Peter Quill who will be the main character and the only one who is also playable, even if he can give orders to his comrades to be supported in delicate situations. If the structure of the game seems clear today, this was not the case throughout production, since we have just learned that this Guardians of the Galaxy should also benefit from a significant multi component.

It is through the LinkedIn profile of Simon Laroche, who currently works at Guerrilla Games as game director on a game not yet announced (perhaps a VR game, who knows …) and whose CV betrays his liabilities. The latter indicates that he stayed at Eidos Montreal, in particular as head of gameplay for Guardians of the Galaxy on the online and multiplayer aspect. It is even indicated that he had worked on it from March 2017 to February 2018 before the studio decided to cancel it. What was the form of this multiplayer? Close to what we got with Marvel’s Avengers with coop ‘, or rather PvP clashes? Still questions that may remain unanswered for a few more years.
