Even if none of the Epic Games Store’s exclusives have caught your fancy since it launched last month, the company has made it worthwhile to hang around by means of a strong parade of free games. Coming up, the store will be offering the excellent and imaginative What Remains of Edith Finch for free to anyone willing to log in and claim it.
Epic has forged some partnerships in the games development world, which has so far resulted in free copies of Subnautica and Super Meat Boy on the new storefront. Starting January 10, the free game will be Edith Finch, an emotionally-stirring story told through several surrealist vignettes. It’s still perhaps the finest of the so-called ‘walking simulators’ to date, and it tells the story of a cursed family by having you relive various memories, all imaginatively told through short, reality-bending experiences that range from splashing around in the tub as a baby to lurking under someone’s bed as a terrifying monster.
What Remains of Edith Finch was Joel’s pick for best of the year when it launched, and it also picked up the BAFTA for Game of the Year in 2017. If you’ve missed it so far, this is a perfect opportunity to experience something very different, and it’s hard to argue with the price.
To get your free copy, you’ll have to download and install the Epic Games app and log in with a store account. When January 10 rolls around, you’ll be able to simply click the What Remains of Edith Finch banner on the homepage and then ‘buy’ the game for zero dollars, pounds, Euros, or your preferred local currency. It’ll be added to your library and you’ll be able to install it using the Epic Games launcher.

What Remains of Edith Finch will be free until January 24, which is when the next free game will be up. Right now, you can still pick up a free copy of Super Meat Boy.
