Former Tekken Director Explains How AI Influences Content Creation and Game Development

Katsuhiro Harada recently weighed in on a viral AI-generated video attempting to summarize the Tekken series’ narrative, offering his perspective on the role of technology and artificial intelligence in game development. His comments came in response to a user’s claim that certain AI-produced videos explain the Tekken lore more effectively than the games themselves.

Harada pushed back against this assessment, emphasizing that it reflects a misunderstanding of both technological history and the nuances of the creative process:

Judging a final product in isolation, without understanding the context of how or why it was built, inevitably leads to superficial conclusions.

He likened such critiques to disparaging historical events or classic cinema for their lack of modern technical sophistication.

According to Harada, AI-generated videos only exist by harvesting assets and materials painstakingly crafted by the development team. He noted that while the results may appear visually impressive, the AI’s interpretation of characters often deviates significantly from the original creative intent, frequently resulting in stilted language and uncanny visuals.

While acknowledging AI’s proficiency in terms of speed and resource management, he remarked:

Technical prowess does not equate to superior creative execution, and it certainly does not validate the claim that AI narrates the history of Tekken better than the games themselves.

Harada concluded by stating that game development has always been intrinsically tied to technological shifts, making the integration of AI an inevitable progression rather than a replacement for human ingenuity. He suggested that the discourse surrounding AI should prioritize the underlying tools and methodologies rather than fixating solely on the output.
