Square Enix notes that “some of these features may not be applicable in certain situations,” and that each option can be toggled on or off as desired.
I have a love–hate relationship with JRPGs: mostly love, but I often resent how much grinding is required to meet boss difficulty even after completing side content. That’s why what Final Fantasy 7 Remake director Naoki Hamaguchi said about the new progression options resonated with me:
“I feel that the way people enjoy content has become more flexible these days, as we see with video streaming platforms, and that people also want the same thing from games, with options to tailor the experience based on the time they have and their levels of interest,” Hamaguchi explained.
“I have also had personal experiences where I wanted to play something with the limited time I have but gave up because of the time it takes to level up characters or traverse the game.”
I hear you, Hamaguchi-san. Games like Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth can feel tedious toward the end, and while I didn’t find the original Final Fantasy 7 Remake unbearably grindy, these new options should make the experience far more approachable for newcomers who want to enjoy the epic story without the slog.
In the meantime, here are the best JRPGs you can play right now.
