The developers behind the Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remake have addressed changes to the main heroines’ costumes, clarifying that the outfits were not censored but received upgraded textures.
The message was posted on the series’ official social channels after fan discussions sparked by the remake announcement. The team expressed gratitude for the community’s support and listed key updates. The release is slated for early 2026 and is being developed on Koei Tecmo’s latest engine. Mio and Mayu Amakura’s costumes have had their textures reworked to align with the enhanced visuals; the developers emphasized these adjustments are intended to enrich detail rather than alter the original designs.
In addition to refreshed character models, the remake modernizes the classic horror experience. The village of Minakami—long known for its unsettling atmosphere—now features darker, more realistic lighting and shadows to intensify the dread. Core gameplay systems—controls, level design, and spirit encounters—have been overhauled by Team Ninja Studio, leveraging their expertise in action-RPG combat design.
The project is overseen by producer Fuminiko Yasuda and game directors Hidehiko Nakajima and Makoto Shibata, who have stressed their goal of making this remake the most immersive entry in the series.
The original game debuted in 2003 on PlayStation 2. It was later ported to Xbox and reworked for Wii in 2012. The 2026 release will serve as the second full remake, blending nostalgia with contemporary horror technology.
