“Fallout 5 Will Take Into Account the Events of the Show” — Todd Howard on the Series

The second season of Fallout has officially debuted on Prime Video, further expanding the live-action adaptation of the iconic gaming franchise. The series is set in a grim post-apocalyptic landscape following a global nuclear catastrophe. Its inaugural season was a massive commercial hit, successfully bridging the gap between hardcore fans and a brand-new audience.

Bethesda’s Todd Howard shared that while the idea for an adaptation first emerged as early as 2009, the project only began to take shape after he connected with executive producer Jonathan Nolan.

He turned out to be an incredibly dedicated Fallout enthusiast.

Emil Pagliarulo, the Design Director at Bethesda, confirmed that the series is considered canon within the wider universe:

Everything unfolding in the show has either occurred or will occur within the games. While television is a completely different medium, and we needed to get the tone exactly right, they were very respectful of our creative vision.

The show’s immense popularity had a direct impact on the gaming series: prices were slashed, and significant content updates were rolled out. Fallout 4 surged back to the top of the charts, while Fallout 76 saw a record-breaking influx of players.

Producer Bill LaCoste noted:

We were confident that the audience would find their way to the games after seeing the show.

Creative Director Jon Rush added:

Our games are built hand-in-hand with the community.

Todd Howard also confirmed that the narrative impact of the TV series will be integrated into the upcoming Fallout 5:

Fallout 5 will exist in a world where the events depicted in the series are a part of the established history.
