Fable Lead Confirms Players Can Romance, Marry, and Divorce Nearly All 1,000 NPCs

Longtime fans likely remember the quirky charm of wooing Bowerstone’s elite or charming nomadic travelers in Fable 2 through muscle-flexing, dancing, or gift-giving. The reboot appears to be modernizing these romantic pursuits significantly. However, not every union is destined for a happy ending; the game fully supports the reality of divorce—whether you initiate it or your spouse decides they’ve had enough of your heroic antics.

“You can converse with them, romance them, and wed them. You can also experience the fallout of a divorce,” Fulton added. “Beyond that, you can have children, hire them for work, or even fire them. These NPCs represent a complex game within the game, serving as a foundational and unique pillar of the Fable identity.”

As Fulton elaborated, Albion’s inhabitants are part of a reactive ecosystem. Your reputation with various settlements is influenced by a ‘witnessing’ system where NPCs judge your actions based on their individual worldviews, traits, and personalities.

“We caught a glimpse of this in the Developer Direct footage when descriptive tags popped up on the screen,” Fulton noted. “That’s the world reacting to you—whether they view you as generous, dishonest, honorable, or even a bigamist. There is an incredible breadth of behaviors for them to respond to.”

Fulton also confirmed that players can indeed choose a bigamous path, marrying multiple partners simultaneously—though you should expect the community to have strong opinions if your secrets come to light. With such a massive population to engage with, Albion is shaping up to be a playground for both true love and high-stakes social drama.
