  • Lead programmer Tom Guillermin suggests this oversight stemmed from the team’s modest expectations. Sandfall Interactive simply didn’t anticipate their debut would become such a massive sensation. “We weren’t certain the game would resonate this strongly,” Guillermin admitted. “We assumed many would just rush the story. It was a genuine surprise to see people uncovering every secret before entering the final dungeon. We’re thrilled, of course, but it wasn’t what we predicted.”

This experience will likely inform the studio’s future projects. One principle remains firm, however: the developers intend to stay true to their own creative instincts—focusing on “what we think is cool”—rather than diluting their vision to suit everyone.

Before Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 swept major awards, Sandfall was modestly betting it might secure an 80 Metacritic score.
