Paradox Interactive has revealed new systems for Europa Universalis 5. The studio says the population mechanics will be the most authentic the series has seen.
The game will include nearly 300 religions: some available from the outset, while others — such as Lutheranism or Sikhism — will appear later. These faiths are grouped into major branches, and individual denominations can shape international affairs, much like the Catholic Church under the pope. Tolerance and conversion mechanics have been redesigned; a nation can change its state religion, but doing so may provoke crises.
There are over 2,000 cultures represented. Players will be able to recognize, tolerate, or assimilate them, though cultural capacity is limited. A “cultural reputation” mechanic will be introduced, along with conflicts driven by competing traditions and identities. Language will also matter: it ties into culture and affects technology and social estates. Nations will employ four registers of speech — courtly, popular, commercial, and liturgical. Art will play a prominent role: masterpieces grant prestige, and during wars artworks can be looted or destroyed.
