As 2024 drew to a close, excitement mounted over a potential breakthrough that promised to make PS5 jailbreaking viable on modern firmware. The strategy centered on a vulnerability found in the PS4 version of Star Wars: Racer Revenge, a revelation that caused secondary market prices for the physical game to inflate almost instantly. However, just weeks after the initial hype, evidence suggests this exploit may not be the definitive solution enthusiasts were hoping for.

The technical exploit operates in two distinct phases. Initially, the native vulnerability within Racer Revenge is used to trigger a tool called Luac0re—an evolution of the earlier mast1c0re project. This successfully allows the console to run custom code, a feat that researchers demonstrated effectively just a few weeks ago.

The complication arises in the second stage. As noted by developer Gezine on social media, Sony effectively neutralized the subsequent part of this vulnerability starting with the PS5 8.xx firmware updates released back in 2023. While Luac0re was designed to retrieve a kernel-level exploit via the network to finalize the jailbreak, that specific pathway appears to be securely locked on any firmware released in the last couple of years.

Detailed analysis from creators like Modded Warfare suggests that unless a new method for utilizing Luac0re is discovered, the practical utility of this Racer Revenge flaw is quite narrow. While the exploit remains functional on older PS5 firmware versions, those systems already have established jailbreak methods available, rendering this new discovery somewhat redundant for legacy users.

On a more positive note for some, Luac0re still operates on current PS4 firmware, providing a unique entry point for kernel-level modifications on that platform. However, for those looking for a “magic bullet” to crack the latest PS5 security, the prospects are currently dim. If you were one of the many who purchased a copy of Racer Revenge during the price spike, you might want to consider listing it before the market value stabilizes.
