Digital Foundry Comments on Rumors of a Portable PlayStation Console

According to Digital Foundry, the company is developing a high-performance handheld PlayStation designed to compete with contemporary portable PCs, including Strix Halo-based models like the GPD Win 5.

Reporters note that Sony’s engineers are striving to achieve performance levels previously reserved for full-sized PCs—made possible by the console’s tailored optimizations and the company’s proprietary technologies.

The PSSR technology and Sony’s in-house solutions could deliver exceptional image quality and smoother frame rates that may surpass current PC standards.

There is a possibility the new console will use an RDNA 5 GPU manufactured on a 3nm process, reducing power consumption. Even so, its raw performance is expected to remain below that of the Strix Halo.

Analysts estimate the handheld PlayStation’s performance might align with a 25–30 watt Strix Halo configuration. Precise CPU and GPU specs have not been disclosed. Rumors claim the device could include four Zen 6C cores plus two energy-efficient cores, whereas the Strix Halo features eight Zen 5 cores, giving it an edge in demanding games.

Digital Foundry experts believe Sony should allow direct PS5 game playback to give players straightforward access to modern hits in a portable format.

While official information is still absent, all signs point to the mobile gaming market’s competition only just beginning—and Sony appears to be preparing a significant response to its rivals.
