Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Developers Discuss Budget and the “Good Ending” — Turns Out Not Only Fans Debate the Finale

Sandfall Interactive delivered the title without a multi‑hundred‑million dollar budget.

The team behind Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has continued speaking with the press, and in a recent conversation with The New York Times they addressed the game’s budget.

As revealed, the development cost for one of the frontrunners for Game of the Year (2025) was under $10 million.

That figure is lower than many expected — prior online estimates had suggested a budget in the $15–25 million range.

There are, however, a couple of caveats: it’s not specified whether that “under $10 million” includes marketing expenses; and the developers have previously stated that payments for Hollywood actors were covered by the publisher and therefore were not counted in the production budget.

In an interview with GameSpot, game director Guillaume Brosse was asked whether Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 contains a single “true” or “good” ending. He said the team had many debates on the subject:

I believe players’ responses to the endings — and which one they label “good” — are deeply subjective and shaped by each person’s life experiences.

He then added:

In life there often isn’t a single “right” or “wrong” choice that satisfies everyone — it’s that gray area and the hard decisions that make us human. Ultimately, what matters is how you personally interpret the ending and the story as a whole.
