Will Trump impact the gaming industry? White House to review Chinese investments in US companies – Reports

The White House is scrutinizing China’s expanding footprint in the gaming sector, potentially paving the way for new restrictions on foreign investment in U.S.-based companies. As the administration continues to evaluate the impact of social media and digital platforms on younger generations, its regulatory focus is now shifting toward the video game industry.

According to reports from Reuters and the Financial Times, internal deliberations are underway regarding whether Tencent should be permitted to retain its substantial holdings in major Western studios. These discussions are intensifying ahead of a scheduled April summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, as officials weigh whether such financial ties pose a genuine threat to national security.

Tencent currently maintains significant stakes in Epic Games—the powerhouse behind Fortnite, the Unreal Engine, and the Epic Games Store—as well as Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends. Furthermore, the conglomerate has held a majority interest in Supercell, the creator of Clash of Clans, since 2016.

If these concerns gain legislative momentum, it could mark the beginning of a volatile new era for the gaming industry. Developers may face more stringent compliance standards, rigorous vetting of ownership transparency, and, in extreme scenarios, mandated changes to corporate equity structures.
