Blizzard Relieved as Players Return to Overwatch Following a Year of Marvel Rivals Dominance

This humble brag follows years of the franchise attempting to climb out of a self-dug hole. The cancellation of the highly-anticipated PvE mode and friction over live-service changes had left a bitter taste for many veterans. While Marvel Rivals’ aggressive first year certainly applied pressure, it appears that high-stakes competition has ultimately forced both games to elevate their quality.

From a gameplay perspective, the new roster perfectly captures the classic Overwatch essence: a frantic yet graceful blend of chaos. Their abilities feel finely tuned—impactful enough to change the tide of a match without becoming frustrating to play against. We’re already seeing this play out in-game, with literal aerial duels becoming a common and thrilling sight.

Blizzard also seems more attuned to community feedback than in previous years. Following initial criticism regarding the visual design of the damage hero Anran, the developers were quick to respond, promising a comprehensive redesign scheduled for Season 1.

“Stop banning the cat please”: Jetpack Cat has rapidly ascended to become the most talked-about hero in the game, with players praising her as the “most fun” addition yet—though her high pick rate is leading to frequent bans in competitive play.
