The initial wave of reviews for James Cameron’s latest spectacle, Avatar: Fire and Ash, has officially landed. This highly anticipated third installment of the record-breaking franchise is set to make its global theatrical debut later this week.
The film currently holds a 70% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a weighted score of 61 on Metacritic. While critics are nearly unanimous in praising the film’s unparalleled visual mastery, some have noted its narrative familiarity and occasional pacing lulls.
The plot follows the continued odyssey of Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his family as they navigate new perils on Pandora. This time, the heroes confront a bellicose volcanic tribe known as the “Ash People,” led by the formidable and ruthless Varang (Oona Chaplin).
The star-studded ensemble also features the return of Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Stephen Lang. Production costs for the epic are estimated to have exceeded the $400 million mark.
