Some players have suspected that Major Orders in Helldivers 2 are rigged—set up to fail or predetermined—but Arrowhead Game Studios has now dismissed those theories.
On the game’s official Discord, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani addressed the rumor directly, saying the studio does not script Major Orders to end in victory or defeat. Instead, the team adapts to how the Galactic War evolves in real time.
Jorjani explained that the game’s overseer (affectionately dubbed “JOEL” by the community) must account for many possible outcomes because player behavior is unpredictable. Read his full comment on Discord here.
When asked about the recent Hive World Major Order—where the community lost ground on the bugs’ home planet—Jorjani reiterated that the game’s events are intentionally open-ended. Details and outcomes depend on how players respond in the moment; the studio doesn’t pre-decide winners or losers. See his reply on Discord.
That said, Arrowhead can influence the flow of Major Orders by adjusting difficulty and other parameters, but those nudges don’t guarantee any particular result. As Jorjani put it, “We vary the difficulty but we never know what’s going to happen. Our predictions are often wrong.”
Jorjani also outlined the studio’s long-term vision for Helldivers 2: they hope it becomes a persistent, evolving experience—a “forever game”—rather than preparing a direct third installment.
On the possibility of a Helldivers 2 crossover with Fortnite, Jorjani said it’s “not a priority” at the moment, though he admitted Fortnite is “cool” and “quite big.”
