20 years later, Need for Speed: Carbon receives fan-made RTX remaster with improved graphics

Cutting-edge technology is redefining the boundaries of classic gaming.

Modder xoxor4d, who recently showcased a path-traced overhaul for Grand Theft Auto IV, has delivered a similar RTX treatment for Electronic Arts’ iconic street racing title this February.

The visual fidelity of Need for Speed: Carbon has been drastically enhanced through the implementation of path tracing. This transformation gives the project a strikingly modern aesthetic, which is particularly impressive considering the original title debuted two decades ago.

Despite the significant graphical upgrades, xoxor4d noted that the Need for Speed: Carbon RTX remaster currently faces a few technical hurdles:

  • The Autosculpt customization feature is non-functional due to current limitations within the RTX Remix framework.
  • The project generates a high volume of draw calls, placing a heavy load on the processor, which may result in a CPU bottleneck.

The “nfsc-rtx” project is now publicly available for exploration on GitHub.
