The Crown of Sorrow returns inside Destiny 2’s Season of the Haunted, just not as a raid lair like it was in Season of Opulence. Inside the HELM, the Crown of Sorrow acts as your seasonal vendor for Season of the Haunted. It allows you to focus weapons and armor, buy bounties, and unlock upgrades throughout the season.

To upgrade the Crown of Sorrow, you’ll need Figments of Darkness, but you can only get a handful a week, so you’ll need to choose your upgrades wisely. That’s where we come in. In this Destiny 2 guide, we’ll go over the Crown of Sorrow upgrades and the best order to unlock them.

How it works

To unlock an upgrade at the Crown of Sorrow, you must use a Figment of Darkness. You get two Figments of Darkness per week, one through the seasonal quest and one through the weekly seasonal challenge. You can also earn three additional Figments of Darkness through the Crown of Sorrow reputation reward track. You get these at levels 4, 10, and 16. You can only get three Figments of Darkness this way and won’t be able to earn anymore after you reset the Crown of Sorrow.

Besides the first upgrade — which is tutorialized — each column requires a certain number of previous upgrades before you can select an upgrade in that column. They increase in multiples of two, so the second column requires two total upgrades, the third column requires four, continuing until the final column, which requires ten.

Types of upgrades

There are three rows of upgrades: Channeling, Reaping, and Manifesting. Channeling upgrades center primarily on enhancing weapons that drop or that you can focus through the Crown of Sorrow. Reaping upgrades are all about Vestiges of Dread, the currency you use to receive extra loot at the end of a tier-three Nightmare Containment. Channeling upgrades center on Opulent Umbral Energy, which is a currency that allows you to focus armor and weapons.

Suggested upgrade order

The upgrade order you should choose depends on what you want to focus on, so you’re not going to ruin the season for yourself by choosing your own upgrades. However, the suggested order below is about maximizing your Deepsight weapon focusing for weapon crafting and being as efficient with your resources as possible.

  1. Vestiges of Dread Destination Materials
  2. Haunted Armor Focusing
  3. Vestiges of Dread Bounties
  4. Umbral Energy Chests
  5. Opulent Weapon Focusing
  6. Vestiges of Dread Destination Combat Bonus
  7. Umbral Binding
  8. Vestige Capacity
  9. Haunted Weapon Focusing
  10. Focusing Deepsight

After selecting these upgrades, you can go back and fill in what you’re missing. If you complete all the weekly story quest steps and challenges that offer Figments of Darkness, you’ll be able to unlock all of the options by the end of the season. So if you’ve already deviated from our list, you’ll catch up eventually.
