Sony expects the margin to widen over the current fiscal year, which ends March 31, 2026: the company forecasts around 15 million PS5 sales for the year, compared with the PS4’s 17.8 million in the equivalent period. That said, the eventual launch of Grand Theft Auto VI is likely to reduce that gap again.

Rockstar’s much-anticipated sequel was delayed from May 2026 to November 2026, a shift that will influence hardware sales forecasts. Meanwhile, Sony-exclusive titles like Marvel’s Wolverine are slated for the same holiday window, strengthening the PS5’s lineup for that season.

Whether the PS5 can surpass the PS4’s lifetime total of about 117 million units remains to be seen. Big releases scheduled through 2026 — including Ghost of Yotei, Death Stranding 2, Saros from Housemarque (expected in March 2026), and Phantom Blade Zero — keep the PS5’s release slate compelling.

Marvel wanted the new Wolverine game to bring Logan back in “spectacular and visceral fashion,” and Insomniac was “the perfect choice” after the Spider-Man games
