Nintendo Releases Major Surprise Update for Donkey Kong Country on Switch

Nintendo has a knack for catching fans off guard with unsolicited updates to legacy titles. While many were anticipating news regarding the next generation of hardware, the company surprisingly deployed a substantial content patch for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. This update isn’t merely a bug fix; it introduces fresh gameplay mechanics and technical optimizations specifically tailored for the Switch 2, making it a delightful windfall for platforming enthusiasts.

The headline addition in this version is the inclusion of Dixie Kong as a playable character. Borrowing her mechanics from Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Dixie can now step in to assist Donkey Kong or serve as the secondary character in local co-op. When acting as an aid, Dixie utilizes her signature helicopter spin to provide DK with essential aerial lift, extending his jump distance and precision.

Beyond character additions, the update introduces “Turbo Attack,” a dedicated game mode designed for those who crave velocity. This mode challenges players to navigate high-octane, accelerated versions of existing stages, testing their reflexes and mastery of the game’s 80-plus levels.

While the patch is accessible across the entire Switch family, those playing on the Switch 2 will benefit from several hardware-specific enhancements. Nintendo has confirmed that the next-gen version features superior resolution, refined high-definition textures, and significantly reduced loading screens. Additionally, the inclusion of GameShare support allows two users to enjoy the cooperative experience using only a single digital copy of the game.

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD serves as the definitive 2025 remaster of the 2010 Wii classic (which also saw a handheld port on the 3DS in 2013). While the franchise has seen more complex entries, the HD revival remains a high-water mark for the series. As noted in our recent evaluation:

Donkey Kong Country Returns HD remains a masterclass in level design, even if it sits in the shadow of the more creatively ambitious Tropical Freeze. While the original SNES trilogy holds a certain nostalgic prestige, this remaster provides the most frictionless entry point for newcomers. Between the inclusion of “Modern Mode,” helpful equippable items, and the sheer volume of collectibles, it is arguably the most approachable and polished iteration of Donkey Kong’s 2D adventures to date.

The Donkey Kong Country Returns HD version 1.1.0 patch is currently available as a complimentary download for all owners of the game.
