Druckmann also admitted that adapting Joel and Ellie’s journey for television taught him a great deal that he can bring back to game development. He described the experience as an invaluable creative education that sharpened his storytelling craft and collaborative instincts.

“I genuinely loved the experience and learned so much,” Druckmann said, noting the show’s critical recognition. “Working with such talented artists felt like attending a top film school. The lessons I’ve taken from making the series—especially about cinematic storytelling—overlap a lot with my work at Naughty Dog. I think that perspective will help me support this show and future adaptations, but my first devotion remains video games and my work at Naughty Dog.”

How the series evolves without its original showrunner remains to be seen, especially after the season 2 cliffhanger that set up Abby’s (Kaitlyn Dever) storyline. In the meantime, find everything you need to know about The Last of Us season 3 here.
