Jennifer Hale Discusses Her Most Emotional Mass Effect Scene

Determined to maintain Shepard’s stoic resolve, Hale took a moment to center herself before finishing the scene. The interaction remains legendary: two weary soldiers who have traversed the galaxy together, acknowledging the very real possibility that they are facing their final stand. There are no grand displays of grief, only a quiet, solemn promise to share a drink when the dust settles.
In a characteristic show of loyalty, Garrus momentarily drops protocol to order Shepard to give the Reapers hell—a command Shepard accepts with grim determination. It’s a masterclass in understated storytelling. If simply revisiting the scene can cause a lump in the throat, one can only imagine the atmosphere in the recording booth during Hale’s performance.
After a decade of defining the role, Hale has remained vocal about her interest in returning for Mass Effect 5. Should BioWare choose to bring the Commander back, perhaps Shepard and Garrus will finally get that long-awaited drink. We can certainly hope.
While Mass Effect 5 is currently in active development, BioWare has stated they are “exclusively focused” on the next chapter of the RPG saga, promising plenty of narrative depth and complex romances yet to be revealed.
