More than five years after first connecting on Instagram, pop sensations Gracie Abrams and Olivia Rodrigo have reunited for an intimate conversation. The candid chat, released this past Tuesday (July 7), offers a deep dive into the evolution of their friendship, their personal lives, and their ever-evolving careers.

While the two former tourmates had no shortage of topics to cover, the heart of their dialogue revolved around the craft of songwriting. They reflected on the vulnerability required to document one’s life, specifically addressing times they felt their past work had been somewhat “careless” in how it handled personal subject matter. With Abrams’ upcoming album, Daughter From Hell, just days away, Rodrigo expressed her genuine excitement, singling out the track “Afflictions” as a standout favorite.

“It feels authentic, yet remarkably mature,” the Grammy-winning artist observed. Abrams agreed, noting that it stands as the only truly straightforward love song on the new record. “It feels grounded and substantial, rather than superficial,” she explained.

Abrams admitted that capturing the complexities of love has historically been a hurdle in her writing. “When I’ve tried to tackle love in the past, it felt like I was diminishing the intensity of the real emotion. But this song feels incredibly honest to my current experience.” This honesty likely stems from her two-year relationship with Paul Mescal; as she shared in a recent Vogue interview, she has found a sense of “stability and security” in this partnership that she hadn’t encountered previously.

The conversation also shifted to the more turbulent tracks on Daughter From Hell. Abrams reflected on how her perspective has matured: “I’ve become much more intentional. Instead of writing from a place of pointing fingers, I tried to view the conflict from both sides—acknowledging the roles of both protagonist and antagonist.”

“In the past, I think I was perhaps reckless with how my lyrics might impact the people involved,” she continued. “I regret that, and I hope to fix it. Moving forward, I’ve realized you can be profoundly honest about your life without resorting to cruelty.”

Rodrigo praised this nuanced approach, adding, “There’s a beautiful sense of restraint here. That is notoriously difficult to master. My first instinct is often to just lay everything out, but you’ve handled these narratives with such grace and precision.”

This dialogue arrives just over a week before Daughter From Hell hits shelves, serving as the follow-up to her acclaimed sophomore project, The Secret of Us. Fans have already had a taste of the new era through the lead single “Hit the Wall” and the mid-summer release “Look at My Life.”

Looking back at the trajectory of their bond, both artists celebrated their shared history. Rodrigo credited Abrams as a major inspiration early in her career, noting that seeing Abrams’ success encouraged her to share her own music on social media. That mutual support eventually culminated in Abrams serving as an opening act on Rodrigo’s 2022 Sour Tour.

“She gave me such an incredible opportunity,” Abrams shared in a previous interview. “I love her with my whole heart.” Rodrigo echoed the sentiment, noting, “Gracie possesses such a rare, singular voice. It’s uncommon for someone so young to have already carved out such a distinct, recognizable lane in songwriting.”
