At the PAX Australia 2025 panel, Pitchford explained why the studio isn’t concerned by fans’ complaints.
Pitchford pointed out he’s encouraged that players are primarily reporting technical issues rather than criticizing the narrative. He said this is significant because the story in Borderlands 4 has been received much more favorably than in the previous entry.
Narrative director Sam Winkler added that he feels relieved when critiques don’t target a “bad script.” As the studio head emphasized, technical problems can be fixed with patches, while the story remains a lasting component of the game.
During the discussion the developers mentioned an unusual example: one fan defeated 3,000 bosses to farm rare loot. Pitchford noted that such dedication highlights how deeply engaged the Borderlands community is.
Borderlands 4 has already sparked intense debate, but Gearbox believes the fact that players are now focusing on the story rather than the bugs is an excellent sign for the franchise.
