“I played Clair Obscur while we were deep into development, and the tempo and pacing of its battles felt very close to the direction I wanted for Dragon Quest 7,” he explains.

True to its name, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a complete rework of the original. Levels and quests have been trimmed and streamlined, systems have been adjusted, and the visuals have been rebuilt to meet modern expectations. The original PlayStation release never reached Europe, and the 2013 Nintendo 3DS re-release cultivated a devoted, if niche, following.

The wider success of Clair Obscur: Expedition highlights just how many JRPG fans remain eager for well-crafted entries. After previous attempts that failed to make a strong impression, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined looks to reintroduce players to a long-running franchise — and to show that developers can still learn fresh lessons from their peers.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined intends to address one of my main criticisms of the original: the time it takes to reach the first battle has been significantly reduced.
