Activists Fail to Cancel AI-Assisted Indie Hit: My Winter Car Reaches Tens of Thousands of Players and 95% Positive Reviews on Steam

A significant portion of the My Winter Car player base remains unfazed by the integration of AI tools in its development.

Various segments of the gaming community and vocal activists have consistently campaigned against the use of artificial intelligence in software creation. For instance, the developers behind the highly anticipated Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 recently faced “cancellation” attempts after it was revealed that AI was utilized during certain stages of their project.

However, these efforts to boycott titles over ethical concerns have yet to gain widespread traction. The recent Early Access debut of My Winter Car illustrates that for the average gamer, the presence of AI is a secondary concern; their primary interest lies in whether the game provides an engaging experience.

According to the official My Winter Car storefront page:

  • A selection of foundational textures was procedurally generated using AI during the development cycle.
  • Portions of the soundtrack for the in-game radio feature AI-composed music.
  • Various graphical assets and vocal performances for the virtual television broadcasts were crafted with the assistance of AI.

Despite being dismissed as “AI slop” by some critics, My Winter Car reached a peak concurrent player count of over 24,000 on Steam. Furthermore, user reception has been “Overwhelmingly Positive,” maintaining a 95% approval rating.

While discussions regarding the use of AI do appear on the game’s Steam forums, they represent a small fraction of the overall community feedback.
