Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s Gustave actor Charlie Cox says he was “nervous” to play the RPG — and still hasn’t touched it: “I don’t actually know what the story is”

Charlie Cox — best known to many as Marvel’s Daredevil and also a member of the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 cast — apparently still hasn’t tried the game, which isn’t surprising. Like countless first-time JRPG players, the actor who plays Gustave was intimidated by how many hours it might demand.

<p id="p-2" class="paywall" aria-hidden="true">“I’m so excited to play this game, but I haven’t yet,” Cox told <a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/rNst7jVaYZ4" target="_blank" data-url="https://www.youtube.com/shorts/rNst7jVaYZ4" referrerpolicy="no-referrer-when-downgrade" data-hl-processed="none" data-mrf-recirculation="inline-link">IGN</a> at New York Comic Con in October, about six months after Expedition 33 launched. He admitted, “I’m a bit nervous about it — I’ve met fans who bragged about how quickly they finished it, and the fastest was in the low 50-hour range.”</p>

<p class="paywall" aria-hidden="true">It’s fortunate that Cox is an established performer, because his worry about a 50-plus hour title likely rules out any ambitions to become a Xenoblade-style video essayist. He explained that even if he eventually tries Expedition 33, “I’m not sure I’m going to complete it.”</p>

<p class="paywall" aria-hidden="true">“The short answer is I don’t actually know what the story is,” he added. Presumably that may have changed since October — Cox is now nominated for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025, a recognition he politely credits to French performance-capture actor Maxence Cazorla. Cazorla, for his part, described bringing Gustave to life as a collaborative effort and said he’s honored to have contributed.</p>

<p class="paywall" aria-hidden="true">“I know that I die,” Cox helpfully revealed about Gustave in October. “And I hope they make the movie.”</p>

<p class="paywall" aria-hidden="true"><em>Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’s creative lead says Xbox Game Pass “lowered that barrier of entry” for this turn-based RPG, a style that may discourage players who prefer more real-time action experiences.</em></p>
