PlayStation Showcase 2021 airs this Thursday, Sept. 9, and it promises a 40-minute look at PlayStation 5 games, from both Sony studios and third-party developers, launching this holiday season and later.
The livestream gets started at 1 p.m. PDT/4 p.m. EDT; you can watch all of it via PlayStation’s official YouTube channel right here, or catch it on Twitch.
What will be shown?
PlayStation didn’t mention specifically what titles would be announced or shown, but there’s a good bet Sony Interactive Entertainment will show Horizon Forbidden West, which is launching in February. Sony last week announced the special edition options for Guerrilla Games’ open-world adventure (then later shifted gears to include free upgrades for PlayStation 4 owners).
From there, the Sony-published God of War sequel and Gran Turismo 7 are also due for an update. The last we heard of either was a mention, in June, that both games will launch for PS4 in addition to PlayStation 5.
Gran Turismo 7’s launch date was shifted from this year to 2022 back in February. God of War’s sequel was announced at PlayStation Showcase 2020, and wasn’t given a title — but its “Ragnarok is coming” tagline implies that word will figure into it.
Third-party updates
Grand Theft Auto 5’s enhanced version for PlayStation 5 (Xbox Series X, too) is coming this November; some peek at what it can do on the new console is likely. We might also hear about the remasters of Grand Theft Auto 3, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, which were reported back in mid-August.
In other third-party games, Final Fantasy 16 was, like the God of War sequel, first revealed at PlayStation Showcase 2020, and it has seen no news since October 2020. That’s a PlayStation 5 exclusive, and Tokyo Game Show is also on tap at the end of the month, so the timing is right for an update.
With 40 minutes to fill, Sony will for sure be showing a lot more than just those four games. Square Enix’s Guardians of the Galaxy (launching at the end of the month) and Forspoken (sometime in 2022), and FromSoftware’s Elden Ring (coming January 2022) are also strong candidates for an appearance.
