CES 2026 is set to debut the next generation of connectivity with HDMI 2.2 compliant cables. Among the high-profile hardware expected to be showcased is the Nintendo Switch 2.
The HDMI Licensing Administrator has confirmed that the event will feature the first prototypes of UltraHDMI 96, based on the HDMI 2.2 standard ratified in June 2025. This new interface doubles the data throughput from 48 Gbps to a massive 96 Gbps. Engineered for future-proof performance, the standard supports 16K at 60Hz (DSC), uncompressed 4K at 240Hz, and 8K at 60Hz with full 4:4:4 chroma subsampling. It also introduces 12-bit color depth and a dedicated Latency Indication Protocol for precision audio-video synchronization.
At the HDMI LA exhibit, a 500 Hz gaming monitor will be paired with a PC and an Xbox Series X to demonstrate the interface’s capabilities. Additionally, the spotlight will be on mobile gaming, featuring the Nintendo Switch 2 and the Atari Gamestation Go, both utilizing HDMI with enhanced eARC support.
HDMI 2.2 is anticipated to be integrated into upcoming graphics architectures, including AMD’s RDNA 5, with the first certified UltraHDMI 96 cables expected to reach consumers throughout 2026.
