What happens when you cross Papers, Please with aliens? Probably something like this.

British indie studio Nightmarea Games has revealed the first gameplay trailer for Between The City and The Needle, an ‘alien conversation sim’ that sees players interrogating suspected aliens before deciding whether to let them live or, if you believe them to be alien, have them executed.

Players will need to “delve into the thoughts and memories of 40 suspects” and use an in-game messaging system to talk with co-workers before deciding whether or not to set each suspect free. If you do decide to have them executed, an autopsy will reveal whether they were alien or an innocent human.

9 different endings will be included, too, with the outcome shaped by the player’s choices.

“The world you live in is confronted with the realisation that a large number of its population are not human, but an unknown species mimicking human form,” says the developer. “You are a newly recruited employee of Honest Minds, a facility-based cover operation established by the government unit responsible for eradicting [sic] the threat and concealing it from the public.

“Your job will bring you face to face with suspected imposters. Posing as a psychologist, you must question their identities and ultimately use your intuition to decide what becomes of each one. Will you deem them a convincing member of the human race or a pretender living behind a facade?”
