Competition is good. I’m rooting for the Call of Duty team to come back with vengeance – for the players and their team. They work incredibly hard and remain very talented. “We will get a better call of Duty thanks to Battlefield.” https://t.co/xWCGH2EJz5December 9, 2025
That earlier release gave the new Battlefield an initial edge, a gap that was widened by Black Ops 7’s lukewarm reception among critics (it sits at 67 on Metacritic at the time of writing) and a cool response from some players. A strong competitor can spur innovation and drive a push for improvement, which seems to be playing out now.
Whether Black Ops 7 can recover remains to be seen. The developer update promises Treyarch and Raven Software “won’t rest until Black Ops 7 earns its place as one of the best Black Ops games we’ve ever made.” It’s an ambitious goal, and many—both fans and industry veterans—are hoping they’ll achieve it.
Discussion around Black Ops 7’s skill-based matchmaking has intensified after a player ran tests suggesting it’s not as open as some expected.
