Veteran RPG designer Tim Cain — whose résumé includes Fallout, Arcanum, Vampire: The Masquerade and The Outer Worlds — has ended his semi-retirement and returned to Obsidian Entertainment.
Cain confirmed the news in his latest YouTube update. “I’m back at Obsidian,” he said. “I’m their full-time employee and in-person, so not remote. I’m not a contractor anymore. This means I’m not working at other places,” though he added that a few outside projects he previously contracted on may still surface later.
Cain added that he’s “a lot less retired now than I was before.” He’s only been back with the Xbox Game Studios family for about a week, he said — though that short stretch was enough for him to get an Outer Worlds 2 “moon man” tattoo after the game’s launch celebration, according to his account.
The RPG veteran has deep ties to Obsidian, having worked there full time from 2011 until 2020. He directed the original The Outer Worlds and served as a creative consultant on this year’s sequel.
For those wondering about his channel: Cain’s behind-the-scenes YouTube series covering game development will continue, at least for now; he says nobody has asked him to stop.
Bethesda’s Todd Howard tips his hat to Obsidian, saying he invited the Fallout: New Vegas team to the Fallout Season 2 set to revisit the franchise’s iconic world.
