Control is free on the Epic Games Store for the next week. Those who have a free Epic Games Store account can claim the acclaimed 2019 action-adventure by Remedy Entertainment until June 17, 2021.
The free offer headlines Epic Games Store’s Mega Sale event, which likewise runs until June 17. The storefront is also touting Genshin Impact, but the action RPG is already a free-to-play game. It launched on the Epic Games Store on June 8.
Next week’s free games will be Overcooked 2, from June 17 to June 24, and Hell is Other Demons, an action-platformer that launched in 2019 on Steam and Nintendo Switch.
Control, like Remedy’s other big-budget games Alan Wake and Quantum Break, is a supernatural/sci-fi thriller. Protagonist Jesse Faden repels a paranormal threat with a variety of weapons and powerful psychic abilities. The free version being offered is the base game; it does not include the two expansions that followed (and were bundled into Control: Ultimate Edition last fall, which is $39.99 at the Epic Games Store).
Control earned eight nominations at The Game Awards 2019, winning one (Best Art Direction) and another eight nominations at the 23rd D.I.C.E. Awards, winning three (Art Direction, Game Direction, and Original Music). Nominated for Game of the Year by both awards series, Control was also Polygon’s runner-up for GOTY honors in 2019. The game also launched on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019 (and was upgraded to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X earlier this year) but in our opinion, the game’s PC version looks the best.
