AMD is testing a new build of FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) that uses the INT8 format instead of FP8. This variant is intended to perform better on older GPUs. According to Digital Foundry, tests carried out on the Xbox Series X produced some interesting results.
FSR 4 INT8 delivers improved visual quality compared with FSR 3, though it sacrifices a bit of speed. For example, in Performance mode at 4K it provided roughly a 28% performance uplift versus about 29% with FSR 3.
There are upsides, however. In Alan Wake 2 tests at 1440p the new build produced around 4% more frames and a noticeably sharper image compared to FSR 2 in Balance mode. That indicates the technology can perform well on INT8-capable hardware like the Xbox Series X.
One limitation is that the PS5 does not support INT8, so many multiplatform titles are unlikely to adopt FSR 4 INT8. AMD continues to refine the technology, so final results may still change.
For now, FSR 4 INT8 has some performance constraints, but it can enhance image clarity in certain games on the Xbox Series X.
