Bruce Springsteen continues to use his platform to challenge the administration, labeling President Donald Trump’s newly proposed “anti-weaponization fund” a profound betrayal of American values.
During his performance in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday, May 27, The Boss leveled sharp criticism at the Department of Justice’s controversial initiative. The plan earmarks nearly $1.8 billion for individuals claiming to have suffered from “lawfare” and institutional weaponization—a move widely interpreted by critics as a mechanism to compensate those who faced legal consequences for their roles in the civil unrest following the 2020 election.
“We have a president proposing a $1.8 billion fund to reward those who attacked our nation’s capital,” Springsteen remarked to the crowd at Nationals Park. “They assaulted our democracy and our police officers on January 6. This isn’t just policy; it’s an American outrage happening in real-time.”
He urged his audience to remain vigilant, adding, “This tragedy can only be halted by the people. There is no one coming to save us. We have to take charge ourselves—let them hear you at the White House.”
Billboard has requested a response from the White House regarding the singer’s comments.
The Justice Department’s proposal, unveiled on May 18, stems from a settlement agreement linked to Trump’s dismissed lawsuit regarding the 2019 leak of his tax documents. Acting U.S. Attorney General Todd Blanche defended the move, stating the fund aims to “make right the wrongs” for those who feel they have been targeted by federal overreach.
However, the optics of the fund have drawn significant backlash, as many believe it serves as a financial safety net for the insurrectionists who were largely granted amnesty by the President shortly after his return to office in January 2025. This latest clash is only the most recent chapter in an ongoing public feud between the rock icon and the president.
Trump previously attacked the performer via Truth Social, describing him as a “dried up prune” and calling for a boycott of his “overpriced” performances.
Springsteen concludes his current Land of Hope & Dreams tour with a final show in Philadelphia on Saturday, May 30.
