A new report from the Entertainment Software Association finds that women represent 48% of all players. The study aggregates data from associations across six continents.
The survey sampled more than 24,000 people aged 16 and older across 21 countries. In ten of those countries female gamers outnumber male gamers, and in two nations women account for roughly half of the player population. In Brazil women make up 57% of players, while in South Africa they represent 58%.
Mobile devices are the primary platform for women: 64% prefer mobile gaming, and nearly half of male players also play on mobile. Overall, 55% of respondents favor mobile games, whereas just 21% prefer playing on PCs or laptops.
Additionally, 66% of players said enjoyment is their main reason for playing, 58% use games to relieve stress, and 45% cited mental stimulation as an important motivator.
The research highlights that both the mobile segment and the female audience are continuing to expand, shaping global trends in the gaming industry.
