The Sonic the Hedgehog film series has steadily deepened its mythology with each installment, most recently weaving in Shadow the Hedgehog’s arc and his connection to Maria — a development that delighted many long-time fans. Yet insiders say Paramount is considering an unconventional title for the next entry: Sonic CD, a name borrowed from the classic 1993 Sega CD game.
That rumor surfaced via a piece in The Direct, which references a Patreon post by reporter Daniel Richtman. Because Richtman’s post is behind a paywall, the report recaps the claim: Paramount may move away from numbered sequels and adopt a retro-game-inspired moniker for the fourth film. While the idea will thrill franchise aficionados who appreciate nods to the games, it’s still speculative and should be treated cautiously.
Richtman (known online as DanielRPK) has broken accurate marketing details before, particularly such things as promotional scheduling, but his scoops can vary in reliability. Given that, the Sonic CD title could prove prescient — or it might simply be another piece of industry chatter without substance.
Image: Sega, Paramount PicturesFrom a storytelling standpoint, the Sonic CD label isn’t arbitrary. The original game introduced Amy Rose and Metal Sonic — characters already teased for upcoming installments — and director Jeff Fowler has explicitly referenced Sonic CD when discussing Amy’s cinematic backstory. That lineage gives the potential title a clear narrative justification for fans steeped in the series’ lore.
Still, the switch could confuse mainstream audiences. A title like Sonic CD reads more like a spin-off or a nostalgic homage than a direct continuation, prompting questions about whether the film would adapt the game’s plot, or how elements like Shadow’s storyline would be integrated. For now, those questions remain unanswered; the next Sonic movie is currently scheduled for release on March 19, 2027, leaving plenty of time for studios to confirm — or abandon — any naming experiments.
