“We wanted to do something new with Starfield”: Todd Howard admits it’s “been too long” — 14 years after Skyrim and no Elder Scrolls 6 in sight

Howard also admits the gap has been long: “The Elder Scrolls has been too long, let’s be clear. But we wanted to do something new with Starfield. We needed a creative reset.” How long that reset will take remains unclear—Howard tells GQ the new game is “still a long way off.”

Howard says he’s urging fans to be patient: “I don’t want fans to feel anxious.” While that’s reassuring, it’s disappointing to learn The Elder Scrolls VI won’t arrive soon—especially given that Starfield took precedence. Starfield designer Bruce Nesmith has even suggested the space RPG doesn’t reach the same heights as Fallout or Elder Scrolls, arguing that procedural generation made many planets feel similar: “The planets start to feel very samey.” For my part, I found Starfield lacking some of the charm and whimsy that define Elder Scrolls, qualities I hope the sixth entry will recapture whenever it finally releases.
