The Last Night Creator Says Game Won’t Be as Innovative as Originally Intended

Development on The Last Night is gradually moving forward as creator Tim Soret shared a status update on social media.

According to the developer, a prolonged and difficult period for the project is finally drawing to a close:

Next month, if all goes to plan, I should finally emerge from a decade of sacrifice and hardship. The time has come. I am just getting started. I have so much to offer to the world.

Soret thanked angel investors and backers for their continued support. He noted that building an independent studio required years of sustained effort, comparing his journey to Matthew McConaughey’s character in the film Interstellar and referencing the line about a maneuver costing decades:

I am grateful to my angels and investors who helped us resist the temptation to drink from a poisoned well in the middle of the desert while we carved a path to independence. In the indie studio graveyard lie many companies that, lured by the mirage of safety, agreed to acquisitions—only to be destroyed in the first storm.

Soret acknowledged that production on The Last Night has taken far longer than expected. While the game may no longer feel as revolutionary as it did when first unveiled, he believes the delay brings its own creative advantages:

When The Last Night releases, the game will no longer be as groundbreaking as originally intended. But we traded prescience for relevance. Because technological developments and social dynamics have eerily matched the trajectory we envisioned, the game’s atmosphere and story will resonate with the audience.

Players can add The Last Night to their Steam wishlist. The project still lacks a confirmed release date or launch window. Originally showcased at E3 2017, the game has received few public updates over the intervening years.
