Star Wars Updates Rebel Alliance Starfighter Jacket After 49 Years

Ryan Gosling has a history of memorable outerwear across his film roles, from the sweater-jacket pairing worn by Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary to his costume in Shawn Levy’s Star Wars: Starfighter.

Gosling’s character, Kade Auberon, made his public debut at the annual D23 event in Anaheim, California, during a presentation of new Star Wars projects. After the trailer leaked online, viewers quickly zeroed in on Kade’s jacket, focusing on a modified emblem stitched across the fabric.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi - Resistance fighters approaching AT-ATs

When George Lucas released the original Star Wars in 1977, the starbird emblem painted on X-wing helmets quickly became a staple of the franchise. While Star Wars: Rebels later established the in-universe origin of the crest as the artwork of Sabine Wren, the icon has consistently represented the fight against galactic tyranny, uniting the original Rebel Alliance and the Resistance.

Kade’s jacket in the D23 preview offers a stark twist on the traditional emblem. Instead of the familiar upright design rendered in orange, white, or black, the crest appears upside down over crossed blasters or X-wing wings. The design intentionally mirrors a skull and crossbones, evoking pirate iconography.

A pirate connection aligns directly with the timeline of the film. Starfighter takes place a few years after The Rise of Skywalker, placing the story in a galaxy where the collapse of the First Order left a massive power vacuum. Lawless crews could easily exploit that lack of central authority.

The modified insignia might also suggest that Kade adopts the aesthetics of rebellion simply to project a rogue persona, similar to wearing a One Piece jacket to a protest. Star Wars storytelling has occasionally set subtlety aside, as shown when Oscar Isaac had to utter the line “somehow Palpatine returned.”

Whether the emblem serves as personal flair or faction insignia, altering the starbird reframes the legacy of the Rebel Alliance. Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo served as conventional heroes in the original trilogy, but later stories highlighted darker corners of the fight. In Andor and Rogue One, Luthen Rael and his Axis Network carried out severe covert operations, with Rael stating,

“I am forced to use the tools of my enemy”

while Saw Gerrera built a reputation for brutal extremism. Kade might align with that harsher perception of the Rebellion, viewing the movement as a group of lawless fighters willing to use extreme measures.

Audiences will learn the full story behind Kade Auberon and his insignia when Star Wars: Starfighter arrives in theaters on May 28, 2027.
